The Westchester Supermarket Hierarchy: A Sunday Shopper's Guide
Disclaimer: I am a dad living in Westchester, New York. The names of all people, but not all places, have been changed to protect the innocent and me from the glares of my neighbors who are definitely not reading this blog.
In some places, Sundays are for waking up, putting on a suit, and making amends for all the sins you may have accumulated over the course of the week. Not here in Westchester. Well, maybe here, just not with my family. We're not very religious, or at least I'm not very religious. My wife is Jewish. She and the kids go to a synagogue a couple of miles away during the high holidays. Me? The last time I stepped into a church (St. Patrick's Cathedral) was after I missed the 5:31 train home, and I decided to see some of the tourist attractions I always ignore (When is the last time anyone went to the top of the Empire State Building?).
No. Sundays are for another spiritual endeavor. Going to the supermarket.
I'll be honest. The worst possible day to go to the supermarket is Sundays. They're always overcrowded. A sea of Audi Q5's and Suburu Foresters vying for the spots closest to the entrance. A Volkswagen almost impaled me one time. Nevertheless, despite the issues with Sunday shopping, without fail, the wife always has me go pick up some smorgasbord of products that somehow always involves avocados, kale, and oat milk (sometimes we go together with the kids, though I find that slows the process down). Whatever happened to Campbells Soup, Folger's Coffee, and frozen TV dinners? That used to be good enough. Not anymore I guess.
Last week, I was in the frozen food section at Wegmans, staring at the fish sticks and frozen cod, when I decided that I could breathe a little more if I could go to the grocery store on Mondays. Sometimes I think, everything would change, everything would be better, if instead of waiting in line wondering why we as a society moved from plastic bags to paper bags, I used the extra two hours of time sitting on my porch furniture and figuring out how to use the app on my phone to identify birds that wake me up in the morning.
Anyway, below find my list of comprehensive Westchester Supermarkets that I go to, but not because i prefer them to other ones, but because I've been to them.
1. Costco (Port Chester) - The deals. The value. Kudos to Kirkland, and whomever Kirk is and whatever land he may be in.
2. Wegmans (Harrison or White Plains I'm not sure) - Great cheese. Kids under the age of five love the trains.
3. Stop and Shop (White Plains) - I don't like when the store's name tells me what to do.
4. Trader Joes (Mamaroneck) - The aisles are so small.
5. ACME (Rye Brook or Port Chester) - Why don't they have any eggs?
Remember that Folger's commercial? The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup. I remember it too. Sometimes I just watch that commercial over and over until someone in my family tells me I'm supposed to do something more productive.
